Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant

Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant at ShardaCare – Healthcity

An autologous bone marrow transplant uses a patient’s own blood forming stem cells to help the bone marrow recover after high dose chemotherapy. The stem cells are collected before treatment, stored and then returned to the bloodstream through an intravenous line. It is also called an autologous stem cell transplant. Max Hospital

When may it be recommended?

This treatment may be considered for selected patients with multiple myeloma, Hodgkin lymphoma or non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The decision depends on the diagnosis, response to earlier treatment and overall health. A transplant specialist will assess whether it is suitable for the individual patient. Max Hospital

What happens during treatment?

1. Assessment: The transplant team reviews the patient’s condition and fitness for treatment.

2. Stem cell collection: The patient’s stem cells are collected and stored.

3. Conditioning treatment: High dose chemotherapy is given according to the treatment plan.

4. Stem cell infusion: The stored cells are returned through an IV line. This step does not involve surgery.

5. Recovery: The team monitors blood counts and provides supportive care while the marrow begins producing blood cells again. Max Hospital

Recovery and possible risks

Blood counts can remain low after chemotherapy, increasing the risk of infection, bleeding and fatigue. Patients may also experience nausea, mouth sores or other treatment side effects. Recovery and the length of hospital stay vary, and regular follow-up is essential after discharge. The transplant team will explain the expected benefits, risks and precautions for each patient. NCI
